I traveled to Alaska in October to do some filming, and I was blown away by how beautiful it was! The only other time I had been to Alaska before was when I was twelve years old, and we were just passing through on our way to another country. So this was my first real chance to do some exploring in Alaska…and I loved it!

Here are some of the spots I’d recommend visiting if you’re in Alaska:

Colony Glacier
I took a helicopter tour out of Girdwood to go see Colony Glacier. I didn’t really get to sit and enjoy the beautiful view as we were flying out because I was focused on filming and trying to keep my camera steady. But out on the glacier I had a bit of time to take it in, and it was amazing. Being out on the glacier was so surreal, it felt like I was on a different planet. This was definitely the highlight of my trip.

Eagle River
I got up early one morning so that I could try and catch the sun rising over the mountains at Eagle River, but unfortunately it was cloudy that day. But even with it being overcast it was still very beautiful, with apparently very frequent bear sightings. To get to the river it’s a fairly short hike.

Alyeska
I loved the drive from Anchorage to Alyeska. You get to see a beautiful coastline with cliffs and rocks…and with the sun reflecting off the water it’s an amazing view. I definitely suggest pulling over to enjoy and take it in. And apparently depending on the season you’re there you might be able to spot some whales.

Talkeetna
I traveled up to Talkeetna so that I could get a glimpse of Denali. The view was a bit underwhelming for how long it took to drive up there. But on the way I found some gorgeous views of secluded lakes with airplanes and docks that I stopped to get some footage of.

Honestly, my expectations going to Alaska weren’t set very high. Having lived in Utah for a while I figured it would be fairly similar in look and feel. But Alaska really blew me away with how beautiful it was. I loved having the chance to explore and film there.

  1. Jared,
I found you on instagram and love your work. I too am an artist. I also love nature and especially our National parks. I am compiling a book with my artwork and want to share others stories of inspiration from each of these glorious places. I am reaching out to you in hopes that you might want to share your story. A particular event of experience from one of your visits. Would you be interested? I will give you a signed print or t shirt, along with credit in the book. You can see most of what I have on my website, http://www.sageandmortardesign.com. I am hoping for a story from one of the parks in Alaska.

    Thanks,
    Roxanne

    • Hi Roxanne, thanks for the kind words and interest! I actually didn’t visit any of the National Parks in Alaska while I was there. I was able to get a glimpse of Denali from afar, but didn’t get to go to that park or any of the other ones on this trip. So I sadly don’t have a park story to share, but I’m hoping to go back sometime in the future. Good luck with your book!
